We Want to Go with Oh to Venice!

Venice is one of those places that you know is a massive cringe-worthy tourist destination (think Disneyland for adults) but you can't help but love it anyway. Jess has been three times now and Mike has been twice, and we're just as excited about returning this autumn as the first time we went. The buildings whose front doors kiss the canals, the beauty of St. Mark's Basilica, and the plethora of art installations make it one of our favourite spots to visit in Europe. For this water based location we'll leave our car on the mainland as we Go with Oh to Venice.

When we Go with Oh to VENICE we will:

1. KAYAK THE CANALS. Normally most people get around Venice by vaporetto (water buses) or (incredibly touristy) gondolas. But we want to try out a different mode of transportation. Since there aren't that many adventure activities in Venice (unless you count 'eating pasta' as a sport - Jess does), Mike decided it would be a good idea to take a one-day kayak tour of the city's canals. We'll wind through the tiny canals that a vaporetto can't navigate and get a work out while we get to see Venice more intimately - from 6 inches above sea level.

2. LAZE ON THE LIDO. It is highly recommended against swimming in the canals or lagoon surrounding Venice. But most people don't know that Venice has a beach resort area on the island of Lido, just a vaporetto ride away. We'll spend some time here enjoying the beach, the water, and maybe even check out Europe's number one rated water park. When the sun starts to set we'll head back to our Oh Venice apartment (this one and this one are both pet friendly and jaw-droppingly stunning!) to freshen up before grabbing some pasta for dinner. We think the spaghetti bolognese served up on the city's quiet side streets is some of the best in the world.

3. SEE CONTEMPORARY ART. Venice and modern art go together much better than you might think. We've been to the 2007 and 2011 Biennales in Venice, and both times were so over saturated with world-class art (Marclay's Clock and Urs Fischer's wax sculptures come to mind) that we neglected to take in the permanent modern art venues this city has to offer. We're going to rectify this situation in autumn 2012. We'll visit the Guggenheim for an upcoming show of Jean Metzinger's work, and head over to Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, Venice's former customs house and a superb contemporary art space.

4. BERE UN BELLINI AT HARRY'S BAR. Every city has a few "must-do" tourist activities, and this is one of them. Since Jess is a big fan of the Bellini, a Venetian peach and prosecco based cocktail, we'll stop in at Harry's Bar, right on St. Mark's Square, to drink one where they were invented. Afterwards we'll pop into the Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Basilica, and linger here until sunset when live classical music fills the square.

5. REGATA STORICA. We're both suckers for boat races, so how could we miss this, one of the more visually stunning boat races in the world? We'll watch the Regata Storica, which features traditional Venetian gondolas and other embellished historic boats, as they race their way through the grand canal on the first weekend of every September. This race is centuries old, and ends in a water pageant with all participants and boats in 16th century period costume, recalling the glorious past of one of the most powerful and influential maritime cities in the Mediterranean. You can expect some fantastic photos and video of this truly unique event!

  1. Best of luck guys, Venezia is an amazing city. It really is like an Adult Disneyland - as contrived as it is fantastical. As I worked there in an unglamorous way I got an appreciation for the place that was more sober than most. The more I think about that time, it really was living a dream.

    1. Thanks! It is a weird and wonderful place. It keeps drawing us back again and again like no other city in Europe. Strange how that works, huh?
