Books, according to Miranda July

I clipped an article out of O Magazine in the Spring of 2008, when I was living in a two bedroom apartment with three other girls. I was making my way through a long reading list during my first year of university studies at a liberal arts college. I was 18, and thought my brain might explode with so many new words: philosophy, metaphysics, existentialism, structuralism.

I posted the article on our fridge with a magnet. It was a timely reminder.

Thank you Miranda July, woman of words and art. Who proves that you can love both. And put into words what most (ironically) never can: why we love books.

Why, you might ask, am I posting about something entirely unrelated to Malta or travel? I believe you should write what you know. I'm in Canada taking a studio and art history course and right now what I know is books and art. Don't worry, I'll return to our regular programming schedule soon.

To see why I love July's art, check out her stunning outdoor sculptures: Eleven Heavy Things.
