Reconnecting with old friends is one of the most beautiful parts of travel, and we were lucky to have Hailey, my oldest childhood friend from Canada, come to visit us in Malta this April. We had such a wonderful time showing her and her friend around the island, and can't wait for them to come back again.
While she was here, we went to the International Fireworks Festival show in Mdina. But the delight of spectators quickly turned to horror as, 2/3 of the way through the show, the large trees and bushes surrounding the fireworks caught fire and went up in a sizeable blaze.
This post could easily have been renamed 'That time the Mdina valley caught fire'.
Malta has so few trees it is quite heartbreaking to see them succumb to flames. Thankfully, no people were hurt in the fire. But it was a good reminder of the awesome and terrible power behind these beautiful displays of colour and light.
