My little sister's prom

My little sister - whose diapers I once changed! - is asleep in the next room of our flat in Malta as I write this. And it's nearly noon - typical teenager.

The day after her 'prom' (in Nova Scotia, Canada, we get two 'proms' - one in Grade 9 and one in Grade 12) she flew back with us to spend a month on our favourite little island. Having a third set of hands made our two-day transit and unpacking so much easier (thank you, little sister!) I really can't imagine how people with kids (or dogs and kids! or single parents!) do it alone. Kudos to you, jet-setting parents!

Snapshots from Ontario

We've got a couple of scheduled posts for you this week while we're settling back into our flat in Malta and showing our newest guest - my little sister - around the island.
We'll be back soon with lots of great posts and projects planned for the summer!

Farms, lakes, rivers, cities.
Ontario embodies the diversity that is Canada - geographically, industrially, culturally.
It's a beautiful thing.

Goodbye, Halifax

Goodbye university. Goodbye fish and chips. Goodbye Canadian wheat beer. Goodbye real Mexican salsa. Goodbye green grass. Goodbye wooden houses. Goodbye granite buildings. Goodbye rain. Goodbye awesome Canadian banking system. Goodbye super politeness. Goodbye giant sidewalks. Goodbye automatic drive cars. Goodbye spicy Caesars. Goodbye Atlantic Ocean. Goodbye family. Goodbye friends.

This time we don't know when we'll be back again. It's half scary and half seriously cool.

Hello sunshine. Hello blue sky. Hello heat. Hello golden limestone. Hello wooden balconies. Hello turquoise waters. Hello crazy drivers. Hello ravioli. Hello hobz. Hello postgrad. Hello friends.

Hello Malta. Hello home.

p.s. On our way to Malta we're stopping by Frankfurt for a day trip to Heidelburg. Any Frankfurt/Heidelburg recommendations? Tell me! Comment below, drop by our Facebook page, or tweet me @jessinmalta

Cottage Weekend

In June we spent a weekend in Ontario, at Mike's family cottage, where we got our fill of fresh water lakes, green trees, and bug bites before heading back to our dusty, brown, and salty little island (which I wouldn't have any other way, I might add). It was a weekend full of swimming, water skiing, boating, fishing, great food and even greater company. Thank you, to Mike's family, for having us.

p.s. How cool is it that Mike's mom is an awesome (better than Mike!) waterskier?

Niagara Falls

We took a quick detour during our weekend in Ontario to visit Niagara Falls - my first time ever! We happened to be there on the same day that this crazy guy tight-rope walked across the falls. So the place was flooded with media, and we got an up-close view of the wire and the gathering crowds. Clearly, the Maid of the Mist is aptly named. We also got soaked to the bone.

Would you believe I've been to 13 countries but I've never been to the US? I didn't take my passport with me to Ontario, so although America was tantalizingly close, I wasn't able to tick it off my list this time. Alas!

What's a country someone might suspect you've visited, but you haven't? And have you ever seen one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World? Tell me.

That bench in Halifax's Public Gardens

Where we sat on a hot September day playing backgammon, and dreamt a dream. An expat dream.
A year later it came true.

This time, we played backgammon on our iPhones. And we dreamt up other things.

What's the craziest thing you've ever dreamt up?
What are you going to do to make it come true?
