Our engagement party

Mike and I have been together a long time, and it can't have been that surprising that we got engaged, so the extremely happy and excited reactions we received were a neat surprise. We didn't realize engagements were such a big deal!

After we told our families, we planned an engagement party in a whirlwind three days. Which was excellent practice for planning a wedding - we have a much better idea of the kind of party we want to throw. But no, we don't have any firm wedding plans just yet. For now, we're going to take some time to simply enjoy being engaged.

The menu consisted of all of our favourite foods which we made from scratch in the days leading up to the party. And since this blog functions as a record of our lives for posterity's sake, we served: a Mediterranean charcuterie spread with cheeses from around the world, Italian and Spanish style meats, grapes, strawberries, walnuts, pears, olives, capers, sundried tomatoes, pickles, crackers, breads, hummus, tzaziki, and spiced jellies (most from our favourite local European grocer), spanikopita and baklava, chicken/cranberry/apricot/brie and ricotta/mushroom filled phyllo pastries, a fruit and cava mixing station, sangria, non-alcoholic pink lemonade, a fully stocked bar cart, mini meringues with lemon curd/cherry/strawberry/raspberry/blueberry fillings, brownies, vegetable/chicken/spicy yam kebabs, rustic Italian potatoe salad, black bean and mango salad, bruschetta salad, and ricotta/arugula/caper, smoked salmon/goat cheese/caper/dill, goat cheese/sun dried tomatoes crostini on toasted local baguettes. (Are you still with me?) In the end, it was way too much food for 35-40 people. Lesson #1 of wedding planning: portion control.

The decorations were local tulips and mums, and tissue paper pom poms I made the night before (at a grand total of $0.50-$1 each). Lesson #2 of wedding planning: it's not how the party looked that you will ultimately remember, but how it felt.

Our mothers were instrumental in pulling this whole thing off in such a short period of time. Thank you so much for your help, your home, and your hands. At the party we were lucky enough to be surrounded by our families and our oldest and best friends. Thank you to everyone who attended. It was a lovely evening, and we so appreciated all of your kind words and gifts.

  1. I would have loved to have been there even if just for the food & drink! That sounded delicious!
