The Perfect Pit Stop

Just outside Gallur, Spain we stopped for gas at the world's most perfect pit stop.

I was starving, but this pit stop looked sketchy. I got out of the car to stretch my legs and saw truckers peeing on their trucks kind of sketchy. The entire parking lot smelled like urine kind of sketchy.

I doubted we would get breakfast here, but sent Mike in to investigate the 'restaurante' anyway, figuring he would get take-out if it looked edible. He came out with the biggest grin on his face, and told me to lock the car and come in.

Inside was the strangest/best road side diner ever. It was full of truckers wearing ACDC t-shirts and baseball caps, bantering with the most world-weary waitresses I have ever seen. One guy sitting next to us was having a breakfast of two espressos, a plate of ketchup with bacon (no, not bacon with ketchup, ketchup with bacon), and a beer. It's 10 in the morning, by the way. Two guys standing at the bar were knocking back coffees and beers, too, throwing their napkins and food scraps on the floor before leaving. On closer inspection, the floor was covered in garbage. So was the bar. American rock and roll blared from a TV set, and Barry White CD's were for sale on a rack nearby.

But then, on the counter, was a plate of tortilla de patatas. And the coffee smelled good, and strong. And they handed us our order with a smile, and gave us a basket of bread to snack on. And I was in love.

And I couldn't help but feel I was in some surreal diner movie scene. But no one scene in particular - just a compilation of all of the diner scenes I'd ever seen on TV or in a movie where someone barges in with a gun, does a 'deal', breaks someone's heart, breaks someone's jaw, nurses a cup of java and a slice of apple pie. Surreal, but beautiful.

It was the perfect pit stop.

  1. Haha, Jurgen and I LOVE places like this! Sounds so american redneck! :)

The food does look pretty delicious though ;)

  2. Spain has some pretty decent rest stops! It is actually typical to throw napkins on the floor least when you're standing at the bar.

Let's talk.
