Charming Cefalu, Sicily

Cefalu is a little dot on the map smack in the middle of Sicily's northern coast. With the help of trusty Google Images (seriously, I can't tell you how many times we make travel decisions this way), we decided to make a quick stop here to stretch our legs on our way to Palermo.

(One of my favourite photos of Elle, ever.)

During this road trip I took off my art history cap. I don't know when Cefalu was founded, by whom, or how this little town evolved. And this time, it didn't matter.

For our little Sicilian road trip we simply enjoyed whatever city we found ourselves in with our eyes and our tastebuds. And, if we truly had to know a historical fact or two about something, we consulted our little guidebook over a glass of wine at the end of the day. Not in the middle of the street and/or museum/church/etc. It was super relaxing: just what we needed after a few crazy weeks of work and school.

Cefalu, and Sicily as a whole, was very dog friendly. I wanted to publicly thank the staff at Cafe del Molo in Cefalu for letting us eat there with our pups (they didn't bat an eyelash 'We love dogs!') and for not minding when our dogs took to barking at every stray cat that strolled by. Like any good Mediterranean city, Cefalu is full of stray cats.

And that drink up there? My favourite kind of lemonade - fresh Sicilian lemons, no water added, sugar on the side.

I would love to go back to Cefalu and stay for a night or two, read a good book on the beach, and eat more of its local seafood. Right before we left I saw a lone fishermen in his tiny boat hauling in nets on the turquoise sea as the sun set behind him, just in time for dinner. It was breathtaking.

Cefalu is nothing if not charming.

  1. Jess and Mike:

This is a wonderful post. Now you know why I have my heart set on moving to Sicily. When we move we would love to have you visit and stay with us as often and as long as you want. And you dogs too!

    1. I totally get it now!

Thank you for the kind invitation. Now that I'm entirely smitten with SIcily, I may just have to take you up on that :)

Looking forward to seeing you both in June!

  2. Sometimes it's nice to stop thinking so much and just be in the moment and enjoy the surroundings. It sounds like you did that in Cefalu. (Cefalu is quickly becoming a favourite European town name - so fun to say!)

    1. It is kind of fun to say :)

Come to Malta, we've no shortage of tongue-twisting town names here. Try Xlendi, Xemxija, Marsaxlokk, or Swieqi!

  3. Ha! We found Cefalu the exact same way...I saw that picture of the bench overlooking the city and I was sold. And our expectations were exceeded. we LOVED Cefalu and wined and dined on the most delicious food..omg. I would love to go back there

Let's talk.
