The best thing I ate in Sicily: Busiate pasta

I am enamoured (not a word to be used lightly!) with busiate. Long tendrils of corkscrew pasta, busiate is native to the Trapani area of Sicily and darn near impossible to find anywhere else (except on Amazon). And it is simply the best pasta I have ever had.

This dish was served up with a simple tomato sauce (my favourite), fresh swordfish, little prawns, eggplant that melted in your mouth, and a sprinkling of mint.

When it arrived at our table our server looked at Mike and said, Your pasta? It's ok. But, trust me, you really want to try her pasta.

You know those meals you have when you travel and you know you'll never forget the experience? This was one of those, and we knew it right away.

As we ate we recounted other memorable meals from our travels - a Valentine's lunch in Vienna, that Chinese food I had in Paris with my mom, my first fresh pasta experience in Venice, my first Thai experience in Vienna, eating potato pizza in Rome, and every single meal we ate in Marrakech.

Try this exercise, and tell me you're not hungry at the end of your list.

I ate my beautiful busiate pasta at Sapori di Sicilia in San Vito Lo Capo, where the service is actually as good as the views and the food (a magical combination, not often achieved).

Below, behold the evidence of the well enjoyed lunch. (And yes, I managed to find Bloody Mary's in this little Italian town!)

I found a package of busiate in a gourmet food shop in Siracusa just before we left Sicily. I'm saving it for a bad day when I need to be reminded of that sunny, sandy, delicious little town.

Come back tomorrow to see why (besides the busiate) San Vito Lo Capo is my favourite place in Sicily.

  1. You have my stomach grumbling for pasta before 8 am.

    1. There's nothing wrong with pasta for breakfast! :)

  2. Delicious! I always remember the food I try on different vacations. I had a wonderful pasta dish with tomatoes and capers in Rome last year... if we ever go back, I'm running to that restaurant!

Let's talk.
