nice to meet you.

I'm Jess, a twenty-something Canadian living in the middle of the Mediterranean.

I make things using key strokes and brush strokes. I'm a traveller, risk taker, and writer. I love my camera, cheese, and social media. I share a dream of owning and operating a boutique hotel with my husband. I once appeared on reality TV.

I hold two postgraduate degrees in integrated marketing communication and business administration and a bachelor's degree in art history. My first real job was selling art in a gallery. I have a healthy interest in tech, design, and advertising.

This blog began in 2010 as Mike and Jess in Malta, which was created to share bits of my life abroad with my family. Over three years this blog evolved, and with it my interests. In 2013 I launched The Stroke - a new travel and lifestyle blog - in this space. At The Stoke I write about what I know: traveling, life abroad, and the intersection between creativity, entertainment, and business.

MIKE: holds a bachelor's degree in bean counting accounting and is currently studying towards his CGA certification. His first real job was as a sous chef at a hotel. He swims like a fish, makes a mean mojito, and has green eyes. We met on our high school student council over ten years ago. We've been dreaming big and making each other laugh since then. We first visited (and fell in love with) Malta in 2008. We added two pups to our lives the same year (Ellie & Winifred) and moved from Halifax, Canada to Malta in the autumn of 2010. We got engaged on a big grassy hill in our hometown in June 2012 and were married in the summer of 2013.

DOGS: they are two Dachshund Chihuahua crosses. One is crazy (that's Elle), one is shy (little Win). They love tennis balls, celery, burrowing in blankets, and laying in the sun. They hate cats. They also once appeared on reality TV.
